Camila Sposati
Camila Sposati (*1972 in Saõ Paulo, lives and works in Vienna) investigates processes of creation and transformation, of the Earth, of elements, of energy, and the social and epistemological systems that shape our experiences of them. Using methods that often approach scientific research methodologies, Sposati examines social and geological systems from the micro to the macro, from the growth of crystals in controlled laboratories to the movement of the Earth’s crust. Sposati juxtaposes material and historical processes to challenge our perception of nature and its significations.
In her most recent solo exhibition in 2023, “Atem-Stücke (part 1)” was at IFA Stuttgart, and “Atem-Stücke (part 2)” was at IFA Berlin. Among the group of artists selected for the exhibition “Hard/Soft” at MAK Vienna, curated by Bärbel Vischer and Antje Prisker, exhibiting together with artists such as Franz Erhard Walther, Ingrid Wiener, Gelatin, Noa Eshkol and Magdalena Abakanowicz. “Cybernetics of the poor”, curated by Diedrich Diederichsen and hosted by the Tabakalera San Sebastian and Kunsthalle Wien in 2020. Since then, her work has been represented by Georg Kargl Fine Arts, an art gallery based in Vienna. She obtained the title of Master in Visual Arts from Goldsmiths College (London, United Kingdom), an institution that, like the Akademie der Bildende Künste, notably combines artistic production with cultural studies, philosophy and politics. During her residence in Paris in 2012 and 2013, she frequented the anthropology course given by Isabelle Stengers at Université Paris Nanterre, as well as meetings with social anthropologists like Frédéric Keck, former director of Musée du quai Branly, an ethnographic museum located in Paris, currently director of research at the Laboratory of Social Anthropology (CNRS-Collège de France-EHESS) and author of a text included in a monograph on her work entitled Stone Theatre (Berlin: Revolver, 2016). The research that began with Stone Theatre was deepened in Earth Anatomical Theatre, a work presented at the Third Biennale of Bahia (Salvador, Brazil, 2004), which proposed an analogy between studies of human anatomy and the anatomy of the earth through the reproduction of an anatomical theatre excavated on the site of the Biennale. She also conducted geological, historical and aesthetic research in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan that culminated in the project “Charting Revolution, Transecting the Symbolic Roots of the Earth,”, and in the debate “Geologic Time” at the Banff International Curatorial Institute (Banff, Canada, 2018). She presented the essay: “In Making the Object and their Reversibility” at the 36th CIHA Congress Matter and Materiality in Lyon, France.
