Marcel van Eeden
Schritte ins Reich der Kunst
In addition to a new series created specifically for the museum, this exhibition brings together for the first time all the major narrative threads that van Eeden has developed day by day over the past five years, drawing on photographs, films, and text fragments. Schritte ins Reich der Kunst consistently looks back to the time before the artist’s birth in 1965. By examining exclusively the period of his own absence, van Eeden approaches the concept of death and the question of the meaning of life itself in a highly unusual way.
Like no other artist, van Eeden has brought the medium of hand drawing to the forefront of contemporary art. The exhibition was developed in close collaboration with the Kunstmuseum Sankt Gallen, which will host the show in Switzerland in the spring of 2011. Following that, the exhibition will be shown at the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt.
