Vera Frenkel
In ihrem Werk hat die Multimedia Künstlerin Vera Frenkel (1938) in unterschiedlicher Weise die Erfahrung und die Problematik von Vertreibung, Exil und Diaspora thematisiert. Ungeachtet ihrer europäischen Herkunft erfuhr sie ihre Sozialisation in Nordamerika, wo Alltagspraxis und moralisches Engagement anders formiert sind als in Europa. Ihre Arbeit kreist um Fragen nach der Darstellbarkeit von Erinnerung und Geschichte, politischem Machtmissbrauch und den daraus folgenden Konsequenzen. Aus einem Palimpsest von Erinnerungen, Gerüchten, Abwesenheiten und einem „Zeugnisablegen in Abwesenheit von Zeugenschaft“ konstruiert sie einen Diskurs von Geschichtsschreibung, die, im Unterschied zur Wissenschaft, jenseits von Faktizität auch Gestaltung ist und jedes Geschichtsbild mit anderen Bildern überlagert. In einer ihrer bekanntesten Arbeiten Body Missing geht es in einer Videoinstallation und dem daraus entwickelten Webprojekt um den "Sonderauftrag Linz", das für Linz geplante Führermuseum und das Schicksal der dafür zusammengetragenen Kunstwerke. In Verbindung von historischen Details und dokumentarischem Material nähert sich Frenkel innerhalb einer fiktiven Rahmenerzählung rund um eine Bar dem ungeklärten Verbleib dieser Werke.
Ihre Arbeiten waren auf der documenta IX in Kassel vertreten und wurden u.a. in der National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (1985), im Setagaya Museum, Tokyo (1995), im OK, Linz (1996), im Museum of Modern Art, New York (1999) und auf der Biennale in Venedig (1997 und 2001) gezeigt.
